Grip Socks: Why Studios Require Them and What to Look For

0

The sock rule in a reformer studio is not a merchandising exercise. A reformer carriage moves under load, and a foot that slips during footwork can put a knee somewhere it should not go.

Sole coverage is the specification

Full-sole grip covers the entire underside including the outer edge and the heel. Partial grip covers the ball and the toes and leaves the outer edge bare.

The outer edge is precisely where load goes during footwork on a moving carriage, and it is the part most likely to slide. If you buy one type, buy full-sole.

Dot patterns and printed silicone perform similarly if the coverage is the same. Coverage matters; pattern does not.

Cuff height changes comfort more than grip

Ankle socks are cooler and fine for mat work. Crew height stays put better on the reformer and does not roll down under the strap during footwork.

Scrunch and slouch styles are a preference. They do not affect grip and they do bunch under a foot strap, which some people find uncomfortable.

Fabric and fit

Cotton blends breathe and are comfortable for a single class. Synthetic blends hold shape better through repeated washing and dry faster.

Fit matters more than either. A sock that is slightly loose lets the foot move inside it, which defeats the grip entirely — the sock stays put and the foot slides within it. Size down rather than up.

Care, and what kills grip

Wash inside out, cool, and do not tumble dry. Heat is what degrades silicone grip; a pair that has been through a hot dryer a few times will have visibly cracked dots and much less grip.

Fabric softener also coats the grip and reduces it. Skip it.

When to replace

When the grip dots are cracked or worn smooth on the ball of the foot, or when the sock has stretched enough to move on the foot. Both are visible.

For someone in class two or three times a week, expect six to twelve months per pair. Buying three pairs and rotating them lasts considerably longer than buying one and washing it constantly.

Mat classes

Not required, but useful on a wooden or laminate floor, and useful if you find your hands and feet slipping in plank positions. On a good mat, bare feet are fine.

What we stock

Everything in Grip Socks is listed by sole coverage and cuff height, because those are the two things that decide whether they work. If you are between sizes, ask us — our instructors have opinions.
