Retrospec Mauve Yoga Mat

How Thick Should a Pilates Mat Be?

0

People arrive at mat class with a yoga mat, discover that rolling on the spine is uncomfortable, and conclude they are doing it wrong. Usually the mat is 4 mm thick and the exercise involves putting body weight on vertebrae.

The thickness range that works

For Pilates, 8 to 13 mm. That is roughly double a standard yoga mat.

Below 8 mm, rolling like a ball, spine stretch and kneeling work are uncomfortable on a hard floor, and discomfort changes how you move.

Above about 15 mm, standing balance work becomes unnecessarily hard because the surface compresses unevenly under the foot.

If you do both disciplines, 8 mm is the honest compromise; 6 mm favours yoga, 12 mm favours Pilates.

Why yoga mats are thin

Yoga prioritises grip and stability in standing poses, and a thin mat gives you a stable connection to the floor. Thickness would work against that.

Pilates prioritises cushioning the spine and the knees during floor work. Different requirement, different mat.

Length matters more than people expect

A standard mat is 68 inches. If you are taller than about 5’10”, your head or heels will be off the mat during rolling and supine work.

72-inch mats exist and are worth seeking out if that applies to you. It is not a comfort luxury; a head on a hard floor changes what you are willing to do.

Grip and material

PVC is durable, grippy when dry, and less so when wet. TPE is lighter and more environmentally palatable. Natural rubber grips best, weighs the most and has a strong smell for the first weeks.

For Pilates, closed-cell surfaces are easier to clean, which matters because a mat used several times a week absorbs a good deal.

Care and lifespan

Wipe after use with water and a little mild soap. Avoid alcohol-based cleaners on rubber, which dry it out and crack it.

Store rolled rather than folded — a folded mat develops permanent creases that become the place it tears.

Replace when the surface has compressed permanently under the hips and shoulders. You will feel it before you see it.

Studio mats versus your own

Most studios provide mats and clean them. Bringing your own is a preference rather than a requirement, and the main argument for it is thickness — studio mats are usually a compromise across several class types.

Choosing

Height over 5’10”: 72 inches. Mostly Pilates: 10–13 mm. Mixed practice: 8 mm. Everything in Mats, Blocks and Bands lists its thickness in millimetres.
