Clean folded activewear and grip socks

Washing and Replacing Studio Kit

0

Most Pilates kit is replaced long before it needs to be, because of how it was washed. Two habits account for nearly all of it.

Heat is the main enemy

Silicone grip cracks in a hot dryer. Elastane loses recovery above about 40°C. Both processes are cumulative and invisible until the item stops performing.

Wash cool, air dry. This one change roughly doubles the life of grip socks and leggings alike.

Fabric softener coats everything

Softener works by depositing a film on fibres. On technical fabric that film blocks moisture wicking, and on grip socks it sits directly on the silicone and reduces grip.

Skip it entirely on activewear. If you want softness, use less detergent rather than more softener — over-detergenting is a common cause of stiff, smelly technical fabric.

The smell problem

Synthetic activewear holds odour because bacteria colonise the fibres and ordinary washing does not remove them all.

Wash promptly rather than leaving kit in a bag. Turn items inside out. Use a proper dose, not a generous one. For persistent odour, a soak in a solution of white vinegar and cold water for half an hour before washing works better than any amount of extra detergent.

Mats

Wipe after every use with water and a little mild soap on a cloth. Avoid alcohol-based sprays on natural rubber.

For a deep clean, wash in the bath with mild soap, rinse thoroughly and hang over a rail to dry completely — a mat rolled while damp grows mould, and it does not come out.

Store rolled, never folded.

Balls, blocks and bands

Balls: damp cloth, out of sun, store partly deflated for long periods.

Foam blocks: damp cloth only. Do not soak them; foam holds water.

Latex bands: wipe and dry, store away from heat and light. Latex degrades over time regardless of use, and a band that has gone sticky or lost its snap should be replaced rather than trusted.

When to replace what

Grip socks: when grip dots are cracked or worn smooth, or the sock moves on the foot. Six to twelve months with regular use.

Bands: at the first sign of nicks, stickiness or loss of elasticity. A band that snaps mid-exercise is a genuine hazard.

Mats: when the surface has compressed permanently under hips and shoulders.

Leggings: when the fabric has gone sheer under tension. This is a durability limit and no amount of care prevents it eventually.

Rotate rather than replace

Three pairs of grip socks rotated last considerably more than three times as long as one pair washed constantly, because each pair gets a full rest and dry between wears.

The same is true of leggings. It is the cheapest longevity strategy there is. Browse Studio Apparel.
