A Home Pilates Setup in Four Items
Practising between classes is what makes classes work. The equipment required is small, cheap, and almost entirely different from what the internet recommends.
One: a mat of the right thickness
Everything else is optional; this is not. 8 to 13 mm, and 72 inches if you are tall. A thin travel mat on a hard floor is the single most common reason a home practice stops.
Two: a mini ball
Nine inch, inflated to about three-quarters. It adds resistance, support and instability depending on where you put it, and it is the most versatile item on the list.
Three: a resistance band or strap
A band adds resistance for arm and leg work. A strap adds reach for stretching and for supported leg positions if your hamstrings do not allow you to reach your own foot.
They are not interchangeable and most people eventually want both, which is why kits pair them. Start with whichever your class uses more.
Four: a foam block
Under the sacrum, between the knees, under a hand in side-lying work. Blocks are unglamorous and they are what makes several exercises accessible rather than approximate.
What to skip at first
A reformer, obviously, but also a magic circle, a large stability ball and a weighted bar. All are useful and none is necessary in the first year.
A reformer at home is a serious commitment of money and floor space, and it needs instruction before it needs purchasing.
The space
You need a mat’s length plus arm span — roughly 7 by 4 feet, clear. Enough ceiling for arms overhead while standing.
Somewhere the mat can stay out, if possible. A mat that has to be fetched from a cupboard produces a practice that happens on Sundays only.
A wall you can put your feet on is genuinely useful. So is a mirror if you have one, though it is not essential and it can become a distraction.
Structure the sessions short
Fifteen minutes three times a week does more than one hour on a Sunday. Short sessions survive a bad week; long ones do not.
Work from what the class did. Repeating exercises you have been corrected on is far more valuable than following a video of exercises nobody has watched you do.
Ask your instructor
Tell them you are practising at home and ask for three exercises to work on. You will get better guidance in ninety seconds at the front desk than from any amount of reading — including this page.
